Chifley is a suburb in south east Sydney located 13km south east of the CBD and is part of the City of Randwick. Chifley is surrounded by the suburbs of Matraville, Malabar, Little Bay and Phillip Bay.
The first house built in the Chifley area was Bunnerong House, which was built in 1825. Most land in the area was owned by the Crown but during the Depression of the 1930s, land was leased to people who built homes in the area gradually slowly over time.
A large public housing complex was built in the area the 1960s featuring a number of four and five storey buildings along with some smaller buildings containing bedsit-style accommodation whereby the lounge-room and bedroom are combined into one room. There are also two schools in the area of Chifley being Chifley Public School and also Matraville High School.
