Haymarket is located in the city of Sydney’s centre and is located at the southern end of the central business district. It is under the local government area of the City of Sydney. From the early 20th Century Sydney’s produce markets were located here, right through till the 1980′s when they were moved to the new site at Flemington. The site still operates as a produce and flea market. The Market City complex contains an apartment building, food court, shops, cinema and restaurants.
The outer walls of the original building were built in 1909 and have been preserved and restored, they were designed by architect C. Broderick and are part of the original city markets and an example of Edwardian architecture. The new markets include the Sydney City Markets building designed and built in 1910 by architect George McRae. Haymarket’s neighbouring suburbs include Ultimo, Chippendale, Surry Hills and the Sydney Central Business District itself.
