Heckenberg is located 36 kilometers south west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Liverpool.
Heckenberg has been named after a pioneering family who settled in the area prior to the 1840′s, Casper Theodore Heckenberg had been born in Plymouth England in 1810, who later moved to Hull with his parents Harriet and Henry. Casper was a master mariner who sailed ships between Sydney and Port Stevens for the logging trade. After the family had bought their land in the Liverpool area some of the Heckenberg sons became well known Woodchoppers, with James William Heckenberg winning the Australian Wood chopping Championship at the turn of the century.
Heckenberg was part of the Green Valley housing estate which in 1960 was subdivided. It is surrounded by the suburbs of Green Valley, Busby, Sadleir, Bonnyrigg, Ashcroft and Mount Pritchard.
