Holroyd is located 24 kilometers west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Holroyd. The suburb takes its name from the first Mayor of the area Arthur Holroyd; he was also a local landowner and businessman. The administrative centre for Holroyd is located in nearby Merrylands.
In 1855 Arthur Todd Holroyd acquired land in this area; he named his property which was located in Merrylands Sherwood Scrubs after his former home in England. He became the first mayor of Holroyd which was then the Municipality of Prospect and Sherwood. He made clay pipes for drainage at Sherwood Scrubs and introduced drainage to the local area. He was very a well respected and powerful man on many local boards and committees. Now redeveloped the historic Goodlet and Smith brick pit sites are the home of the Holroyd Gardens Park and Holroyd Gardens Park Estate which is a medium density housing development.
